My Dad is not exactly known for having great taste in television. Being a reality TV addict, I can’t say much to defend myself. However, my bad taste and his bad taste are two very different things. He is into the chick dramas like “Grey’s Anatomy” that just bore me to death and I am still watching “Real World” and “The Biggest Loser” religiously. So when he suggested on more than one occasion that I watch “Medium”, I was very skeptical. Now that “The Bachelor” is done with its ridiculously cheesy and soft scripted season, I have a little more room on my DVR for Monday nights, so I thought I should give it a shot. The verdict? Let’s just say that my and my Father’s similarities go beyond our stubborn nature and outrageously thick eyebrows.
Within the first few minutes of the show, I admittedly found myself being bored and allowing my mind to ponder Tuesday nights episode of “The Real Housewives of New York City.” Please don’t judge me. The first scene was what appeared to be a suburban neighborhood in the middle of the apocalypse. Although I’m sure movies and shows with this subject matter are very entertaining to some, they don’t exactly spark my interest. But, when I complained about it, my girlfriend insisted that I give it a chance instead of flipping to VH1 to watch “Rock of Love Bus” reruns. Although I don’t normally admit when my girlfriend is right and I’m wrong, I must in this case. After one episode, I am officially a fan of Patricia Arquette and her creepy little toe-headed children.

As a self proclaimed critical and judgmental person, it must be said why I am sold on this NBC drama. First of all, there is never a dull moment in the show. It is not so suspenseful and outrageous that you find yourself with a couch cushion shoved up against your face, but each scene is entertaining to watch. As the show progresses, viewers get to watch Allison’s (Arquette) dreams evolve into a key factor in solving a crime and bringing justice to the guilty. We are watching a wife and Mother deal with the blessing and the curse that comes with having a sixth sense. We, as viewers, get to see firsthand how difficult it can be to shoulder this responsibility of having visions – visions that play in Allison’s head like a movie she would never pay to see.

Besides the suspense and entertainment one will experience during this one hour drama, I believe it has great value in how society’s views of women need to evolve a bit. In Monday’s (March 9) episode, Allison’s oldest daughter Ariel having inherited her Mother’s sixth sense is dealing with the fact that her intuitiveness does not apply to each person she comes in contact with. As a young teenager, she is learning to embrace her gift while, at the same time, accepting that it will leave some things to be figured out on her own. On the majority of television sitcoms and dramas, teenage girls are portrayed as boy crazy, shoe obsessed, spoiled brats. It was refreshing to see Ariel (Sofia Vassilieva) be represented in a different light. In watching Monday’s episode, I learned that Vassilieva’s character is an extremely bright math student. Hold the phone – a female who is good at math? That’s just crazy talk. But, yes she is so intelligent that the cute boy in class, Gavin, asks her to tutor him. Of course, she obliges only to find out that he has a copy of the mid-term they are studying for and passes it off as practice questions. Translation- Gavin causes Sofia to cheat unknowingly. Rather than giggling about it and chalking it up to the “boys will be boys” mentality, Sofia reprimands Gavin and cancels their upcoming date. Thank God for NBC finally placing a young, strong female character to be a positive role model for young female viewers out there. It is obvious that Sofia gets her strength and intelligence from dear old Mom who is successful in her career and a loving Mother and wife at the same time.

Although I have made no qualms about the fact that I do not always have the finest taste in television, I hope you strong female readers will heed my advice in this case. “Medium” is a great show in all aspects. Shows that represent women in such a positive light need our support. And for my dear old Dad, I never seem to regret it when I put your words of wisdom to use.

Admittedly, I am a closeted fan of bad reality television. I guess “admittedly” and “closeted” are sort of contradictory terms. So, I will admit to the fact that I am addicted to bad TV, but I am still ashamed of it. It’s tough living life amidst an oxy-moron. As a reality TV addict, I have been watching “The Bachelor” for many years and have recently dragged my girlfriend into my addiction as well. Monday is one of our favorite nights simply because we get to relax on the couch in front of this IQ decreasing show. Although I am a fan, I actually have a huge problem with the concept of this long-running reality success. It is not the typical feminist argument fact that all the women competitors have a 26 inch waistline and fake breasts. My problem is with the fairy tale aspect of it which has consistently formed relationships with high hopes that end as quickly as they began. As a member of team Melissa and Jason for this season of “The Bachelor”, I again acknowledge that I am a faithful viewer of the show and I do form strong opinions (shocker, I know) about who I like. However, the couple is almost always set up for failure. Although a few couples who are products of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” have stayed together, most of the relationships have ended relatively quickly. If you know anything about the show, you know that each season several people end up falling madly in love and seem completely convinced that this relationship is meant to be and will be the fairy tale they have always dreamed of. How is it possible that these cast members can seemingly be so sure of their future with this person and then be dead wrong? The answer, in my opinion, is very simple. Take conventionally attractive people away from the hum-drum and stress of every day life and put them up in amazing houses. Give them free food and alcohol. Set up amazingly romantic and over-the-top dates for them. As much as we would like to believe that it is only possible to fall in love with someone that we are meant to be with, I am not falling (no pun intended) for it. Of course couples are going to fall in love. There are no outside circumstances to get in the way of that. These people don’t get to see their love interest in every day life, which is probably relatively boring compared to their life on the show. This is why couples on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” fall in love so quickly and it typically doesn’t last. Once the supposed soul mates have to go back to their regular lives in which they pay bills, go to work, deal with family obligations, and much more, they realize that their relationship is not the fairy tale they had imagined.

Call me a soul-less individual who doesn’t believe in love if you want. I can see where it may appear that way. However, I am actually the opposite. I have been with my girlfriend for a year and am so incredibly happy with her, but it is no “Bachelor” fairy tale life. We have a tiny apartment that we are dying to move out of with a ton of bills to pay. We have family drama to deal with and issues with friends and with work. This is life. This is what a relationship is. In my opinion, dealing with the difficulties in life together as partners is so much more romantic than drinking chardonnay on a helicopter over the Grand Canyon. It may not sound like it, but the idea that two people can choose to love one another through the drama of every day life is amazing to me. The fact that my girlfriend sticks by me even though I come home from work every day with something new to gripe about makes me feel so lucky. Knowing that she overlooks my neurotic and sometimes aggressive personality and chooses to love me anyway is awesome.

After giving much more than my two cents about “The Bachelor”, it must be said that Jason Mesnick and his son Ty are adorable. I watch the show faithfully and will probably continue to do so. Some couples have been able to survive the tragic flaw of the bachelor and that’s fabulous. Any time two people can find happiness and love together, that’s good news in my book. However, we, as viewers, need to be able to be discerning about the lack of reality in this reality series. Readers, fall in love with reckless abandon, but try to avoid the tragic flaw of the bachelor.

Everyone wants to have perfect makeup and skin, but who can afford it? Well, yes, richy-rich people, but seriously, how can non-richy-rich people get five-star quality makeup like the celebs? Here’s the answer!

First off, there are four main subjects of makeup that I found; skin, eyes, cheeks, and lips. (I’m not quite sure if skin and cheeks are different.) And I’m going to tell you about them all!

SKIN:

*Mastering the Basics

To prepare a smooth canvas for your makeup, always start off with clean, moisturized skin. You’ll find that your makeup glides on and blends more easily.

1. Keep your skin free of buildup by using a gentle cleanser in the morning and at night. When cleansing your face, do so gently in upward motion stokes - do not tug, pull or scrub too hard to prevent irritation.
2. Freshen up your skin with a toner containing ingredients that suit your skin type.
3. Indulge your skin and keep it hydrated with a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type. Make sure your daytime moisturizer contains SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
4. Treat yourself to an at-home-facial 2 to 3 times a week. Use a mild cleanser, then exfoliate with a gentle scrub that contains exfoliants that are round and non-abrasive.
5. Apply a facial mask after exfoliating. Rinse off thoroughly and get a good night’s sleep!

Bonus Tip: Even when you’re steering clear of the sun, or it appears to be a cloudy day, always be sure your makeup foundation or moisturizer contains SPF 15 or higher.

*Secret to a natural, flawless look

1. Apply foundation to your cheeks, forehead, and chin using a foundation brush, sponge, or clean fingertips. Blend the foundation all the way to your natural hairline with long, light strokes.
2. Continue blending over the jawline and onto your neck to achieve a natural, seamless look. Check your face and neck in natural light to make sure the foundation is completely blended in all areas.
3. If under-eye circles or red spots remain, do not add more foundation; it can look heavy and cakey. Instead, try a concealer.

Bonus Tip: Choose the shade of your foundation carefully. When testing out shades, pick one that matches the tone of your jawline exactly. It helps to use a mirror outdoors to see how shades look in natural light.

Bonus Tip: Begin by applying a small amount of foundation then increase amount to achieve the degree of coverage that suits your skin.

Bonus Tip: For daytime, mix your foundation with a light SPF moisturizer before applying for a smoother, more sheer application.

*Hide Imperfections

Concealer is more dense than foundation, allowing fuller coverage of trouble spots and hyperpigmentation (red areas). It can be used over foundation or on it own, and has greater staying power. Remember, a little goes a long way!

1. Since the skin under your eyes is more transparent, it tends to look dark, especially at the inner corner near the bridge of the nose. To even out the tone, concealer is a must. Using liquid concealer, gently pat over dark under-eye circles (don’t sweep it across the entire area), then blend with your ring finger.
2. To cover trouble spots and imperfections, apply a thicker cream concealer onto the blemish or flaw. Then lightly press with a makeup sponge.

Bonus Tip: Choose the shade of your concealer carefully. When testing out shades, pick one that matches your skin tone or one shade lighter. It helps to use a mirror outdoors to see how shades look on your skin in natural light.

Bonus Tip: Prepare your skin with a light SPF moisturizer before applying concealer for a smoother application.

*Getting an all-day flawless finish

A light even dusting of loose powder sets foundation and concealer, giving your face a velvety, more natural finish. It also provides smooth blending for any eye makeup or blush to follow.

1. Dip a puff or powder brush in loose powder. Shake off excess to avoid uneven distribution, then apply powder over entire face and neck.
2. To maintain a flawless finish throughout the day, apply pressed powder using a sponge or clean powder brush.

Bonus Tip: Face powder can be used alone, over foundation or over your moisturizer for a natural, sheer, no-shine look.

Bonus Tip: For the closest color match, choose a powder shade that is 3 shades lighter than your foundation.

Bonus Tip: If you are over the age of 30, avoid powdering under the eyes as it can make fine lines and wrinkles appear more obvious.

Bonus Tip: Facial oil-blotting sheets help to remove excess oil and shine without disturbing your makeup. Carry them with you everywhere you go!

EYES:

*The Sophisticated Look

1. Apply a light eyeshadow over your entire eyelid from lash line to eyebrow bone, but not beyond.
2. Define the crease of your eyelid using a medium or dark shade. The deeper the shade, the more dramatic look.
3. To open up your eyes so that they appear livelier, place a dot of a light shade in the inner corner of each eye.

Bonus Tip: When choosing an eyeshadow shade, keep in mind that a pastel shade will look softer while a darker shade will appear more dramatic when applied.

*Creating Elegant, Dramatic Eyes

1. To create a gorgeous nighttime look, use light, medium and dark eyeshadow shades in graduated tones. Apply the dark shade along your lash line, the medium shade on the crease, and a light shade up to the eyebrow bone but not beyond. Soften and blend any hard edges so one color seems to melt into the next.
2. To open up your eyes so that they appear livelier, place a dot of a light shadow in the inner corner of each eye.
3. For a sexy, smoky effect, trace the upper and lower lashes with a dark shadow then smudge with a blending brush. To optimize the look, this can also be done over eyeliner.

*Applying Natural-Looking Eyeliner

For a natural-looking eyeliner and the illusion of lusher, fuller lashes, use a dark brown eye pencil and carefully press a series of dots between your lashes following your lash line.Bonus Tip: For the sophisticated look, draw a smooth fine line alone the top lashes.

Bonus Tip: To create the dramatic look, draw a line inside your lash line (as close to the lashes as possible), then along the top of the lash line.

*How to Get Brighter, Wider Eyes

Apply one thin coat of mascara to both upper and lower lashes. For a more dramatic look, allow first coat to dry completely then apply a second coat concentrating on the base of the lash.

Bonus Tip: For a real eye-opener, use an eyelash curler before applying mascara. Curl gently at the base of the lashes, but never beyond the center of the lashes. Don’t clamp down on one spot for too long or you’ll get a sharp angle.

Bonus Tip: Don’t pump the applicator wand in the mascara tube. Doing so will trap air inside and cause the mascara to dry out. Instead, twist the wand to collect more mascara on the brush.

*How to Get Well-Defined, Well-Groomed Brows

1. Brush your eyebrows straight up with an eyebrow brush. Using small straight scissors, carefully trim any hairs that are curly or too long. Then brush the brows back into their natural shape.
2. Hold a pencil along the side of your nose to ensure that the inner edge of your brow lines up with the inside corner of your eye.
3. Move the pencil so that it intersects with your iris. The arch of your brow should line up with the pencil.
4. Angle the pencil from the outside edge of your nose to the outer corner of your eye to determine where your brow should end.
5. Tweeze where necessary and fill in with a soft pencil or powder.
6. Brush with an eyebrow brush and apply eyebrow gel to keep strays in place. You’re done!

CHEEKS:

*Creating a Natural, Rosy Radiance

When applying blush, you want the color to look soft and natural, as if it comes from within. Read below for tips on how to put on make-up.

1. Tap or lightly blow on the applicator brush to remove any excess blush before applying to prevent a harsh and uneven application.
2. Apply your blush on the apple of the cheek and carefully blend towards your natural hairline.
3. If you have two shades, apply the darker one on the apple of the cheek first, then use the lighter shade to highlight. Blend well so there is no visible line between colors.
4. Highlight your temples, forehead and chin.

Bonus Tip: To know “where to glow” bend over for 30 seconds, then slowly stand up. Where your cheeks are flushed is where you are meant to blush. Apply your blush there and it will be naturally rosy every time.

Bonus Tip: Cheek color should be used to enhance your complexion, not to change your natural skin tone. Use sparingly for daytime, then add more or a deeper shade for a more dramatic nighttime effect. For special occasions, dust a lightly frosted powder over your cheekbones for a subtle but alluring glow.

Bonus Tip: Make sure to blend your blush into your foundation well or it will tend to look unnatural and add the appearance of 5 years to your looks.

LIPS:

*Shape Up Your Lips

Applying lipliner is not only a great way to define and accentuate the shape of your lips, but also to keep your lipstick from feathering.

1. Begin applyling lipliner at the center of your natural upper lip line to define the bow then work toward the outer corners to complete the line.
2. Start at one corner of your bottom lip then follow your natural lip line all the way to the other corner.

Bonus Tip: Choose a lipliner that matches your lipstick or a flesh tone shade for a soft, natural look.

Bonus Tip: To get plumper, pinker looking lips, do not touch up by drawing a hard lip line; smudge it so lips look fuller! For a more dramatic fullness, choose a lipstick shade with a hint of frost.

Bonus Tip: To avoid lipstick on your teeth, put your index finger in your mouth and then draw it out slowly with your mouth closed. What you see on your finger is what would have ended up on your teeth!

*Perfecting Your Pout

1. Apply color onto the center of your lips, blending up and out to the lip line working towards the corners.
2. For longer lasting color, gently blot with tissue, reapply lipstick and blot again.
3. For evening, remember to select a lipstick one or two shades deeper than your daytime color.

Bonus Tip: For a creamy effect, apply a lip balm to lips before applying lipstick.

Bonus Tip: For a matte effect, apply lipstick then blot gently with tissue.

Bonus Tip: For a sheer effect, apply lip balm. Gently dot a small amount of neutral color lipstick across lips, then smooth out.

Bonus Tip: For a glossy effect, apply lipstick then finish with a clear or nuetral color gloss coat for a moist, seductive shine. Remember, the more coats you apply, the more shine so turn up the volume!

*Getting Smooth, Soft, and Supple Lips

For smooth, soft lips, take a clean damp washcloth and gently rub lips for 60 seconds before applying lipstick.

Bonus Tip: For touch-ups during the day or night, carry a soft toothbrush in your handbag or makeup kit. Be sure to brush your lips gently.

Bonus Tip: Apply a lip balm or conditioner throughout the day to keep lips hydrated and protected from the sun’s harmful rays.

Blink 182 officially confirmed that they are getting back together as a band almost five years after their last performance. This month’s Grammy awards brought much speculation and gossip to a head as the trio walked onstage with “What’s My Age Again?” playing in the background and announced that the days of “watching, waiting”, and “commiserating” were not quite over. Did anyone else see the irony in the group walking out to the tune of the aforementioned song? I know that I am allowing my cynicism to get the better of me, but I am inclined to question how this reunion is going to work out. After all, contrary to the words of Peaches & Herb, being reunited doesn’t always “feel so good.” I think we’ve all experienced that relationship that we were convinced deserved one more shot only to find that reunions aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be.

My skeptical introduction aside, it has to be acknowledged that the manner in which DeLonge, Barker, and Hoppus began to mend fences was material for a Lifetime movie. And I say that in the least tongue-in-cheek way possible. Barker’s tragic airplane accident was apparently some sort of wake up call to the remaining two Blink members. After all, life is too short to not spend it with people you care about and that share your passions. It seems that the three realized this and began to repair their formerly estranged relationships. I am no music critic, but I am inclined to think that Blink’s fans, although probably an older crowd now, will welcome them back onto the scene in light of this tragedy. If you’re not getting the warm fuzzies after hearing of this reunion story, you might need to visit your cardiologist because it sounds like you’re missing a very important organ.

Unfortunately, a warm fuzzy is not always enough encouragement to drop $12 on iTunes. My cynical side is wondering where Blink 182 is going to fit into the 2009 music scene. I acknowledge that it has not even been a decade since the group dissolved, but things change very quickly in the music scene. This trio was instrumental (pun intended) in opening the door for their poppy emo/alternative style of music along with others such as New Found Glory and Simple Plan (threw up in my mouth a little). Now, that door is wide open and several groups have walked through it to find success at the other side. This success has been brief for some, but nonetheless it did make them famous. Among these are Panic at the Disco, White Tie Affair, and Plain White Tees. In the early 2000s, these groups were mostly unknown and underground. Now, a short time later, many have found their so-called 15 minutes to have come and gone. I am afraid this scene is on its way out. Unless Blink, along with their record company, has devised some clever plan to incorporate their style into a more innovative and fresh mix, this comeback may be about as successful as that of New Kids on the Block.

Regardless of my admittedly skeptical and sometimes negative comments, I am on team Blink 182. I am putting my positive vibes out into the universe that this trio’s new music will be bigger than Travis’s career as a reality star and that their success will last longer than his marriage to Shanna Moakler. A little advice for the second go round: Tom DeLonge, please ask yourself daily, “What’s my age again?” and keep your clothes on. Mark Hoppus, here’s a message from Angels and Airwaves: “Don’t waste your time on me. You’re already a voice inside my head.” Blink 182 deserves your undivided attention.

Here are a few tips found around the internet. If you find any tips leave them at the bottom in a comment, and I will also be updating this page as often as I find more tips!

Homework: Finish it right after school. This way, you can have the rest of the day to do whatever you want. Turn homework into a group activity. Do it with a friend, a brother or sister. At least you won’t feel so alone—and there are people to gripe with. And they can offer help with homework. a homework helper or two will make the job easier. it will definitely offer camaraderie and some homework help. Take your favorite snacks to the place where you do your homework. Bring some friends together at a special time and place to work together. Call the get together The Homework Helper Club. Should parents help with homework? Sure they can. They can give homework help and explain homework, but they can’t be such a homework helper that they’re actually doing it for you. They’ve gone through middle school and don’t want to totally repeat the experience.

The Popular Cliques: If you could rename this group maybe you’d call it the Power Clique. The Clique that many other kids look up to or the clique that many kids suck up to would be more realistic. This is true for any teen clique, middle school clique or high school clique. Popular cliques aren’t always as fun as they seem. Members are always worried about getting dumped if they don’t follow clique leader rules - and facing humiliating peer victimization. Sometimes following the rules means being nasty to others and if you refuse, the clique may do nasty stuff to you.Think about the popular crowd and the word “popular”. Popular means well liked. Does the word popular really describe all these kids? C’mon. Are the popular kids really liked by everyone—even the kids that they treat as though they were in a perpetual state of head lice? To be popular in the true sense, you just need to have friends. It doesn’t matter whether you are in this clique or not. It’s most important to hang out with people who like you and you like a lot. Cliques are only awesome if you’re part of middle school cliques, other teen cliques or even high school cliques that make you feel like you are important by being yourself - not following questionable rules.
