How to land a fashion mag internship!

Fancy yourself as the next Ugly Betty! Maybe not, but having her job wouldn’t be all bad, would it? Just imagine it, surrounded by glamour and celebrities, organising styling shoots, taking sneaky peeks at next big thing in fashion and style, not to mention the freebies you get to take home!

Working for a fashion magazine can be more than just a dream if you’re determined and go about it the right way. Here’s a quick guide to landing yourself and internship with a hot magazine and kick starting your dream career!  But remember girls, it may be glamorous but it’s a tough job too and you’ll be competeting with thousands of other girls [and guys!] who have the same dreams and aspirations. So here we go …

Be formal and approach this as you would any other job! Submit your ‘highly polished’ resume with cover letter and any references you may have. Depending on the magazine you’re applying to, they may require samples of your written work. So be prepared and have some polished pieces ready to submit if you need to! Rule of thumb, don’t submit a generic letter to all magazines. Adapt each one for every individual magazine your are applying to and do your research. If the magazine has had any recent events changes … increased ciruclation, special issues etc … mention these! This will show that you’re interested and that you’ve done your homework!

Be sure to close your letter with something positive. State your objective, what you want to achieve with them but be sure to let them know how they will benefit from you! Briefly tell them what you can contribute! Keep this information to your cover letter. It’s best not to include this in your resume!

If you make it to interview, be prepared. Research the magazine, company information and know the key personnel by name! But also know your area! Show how hungry you are for fashion by knowing designers, models, stylists, and photographers. Be confident at discussing their styles and what makes them unique. If they ask you what designers you would pull to put together a demure look, don’t say Cavalli or Versace. If they ask you who your top three favorite models of the moment are, leave anyone with a Victoria’s Secret contract off the list. You get the picture.

Last but not least, present yourself well. You want to work for a fashion magazine, you need to show that you understand fashion. This means showing a unique style that is also appropriate. Lots of fashion magazine editors like to see girls who can throw together high end pieces with discount pieces and a touch of vintage. Accessories are a must, but don’t kill the outfit by over accessorizing. Wear great shoes that look expensive, even if they’re not!

Hopefully these tips will help you land a your fashion magazine internship. Always remember to be professional and of course be fashionable!
